Terumo Cardiovascular Group Continues to Lead the Way in Global Clinical Education

Terumo Academy Successfully Completes its First Week-Long Perfusion Principles and Applications Training Course

ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN, October 10, 2014 — Terumo Cardiovascular Group recently completed the first in a series of week-long advanced perfusion training courses. Hosted by Terumo Asia Holdings Pte. Ltd. at its corporate offices, Terumo Academy's Perfusion Principles and Applications course was delivered to six students from Terumo CV Group's India, Middle East and Asia (IMEA) region from August 18-23, 2014.

Terumo supports customer education globally, through initiatives like the on-going Optimizing Cardiac Surgery program, and the newly launched Terumo Academy.

The Terumo Academy Perfusion Principles and Applications course provides a concentrated perfusion education program designed to increase the base-level knowledge of perfusionists practicing in the field. The program begins at a basic level and builds from there, to help participants gain a thorough knowledge of perfusion principles. The coursework also exposes attendees to advanced techniques and concepts in current global practices.

Coordinated by Terumo IMEA Region Associates, with support from Terumo's global clinical specialist team, eager attendees converged on the Singapore training site for the week-long training program. The training included, lectures, simulator based hands on training as well as case observation thanks to National Heart Center, Singapore. "Opportunities for continuing education are essential for healthcare providers all over the world," said Clarence Tan, Terumo Clinical Specialist, IMEA Region. "Attendees tell us that advanced perfusion practice training boosts their confidence, gives them the opportunity to ask questions, to learn new techniques and to troubleshoot issues."

A highlight of the Perfusion Principles and Applications course was the opportunity to participate in advanced perfusion simulation training. Using the Orpheus™ High Fidelity Perfusion Simulator, Terumo Academy surpasses traditional training by creating a life-like simulation of perfusion during cardiopulmonary bypass. The Orpheus system provides trainees with the opportunity to practice emergency situations without the risk involved in real-life procedures.

Course attendees credit Terumo's world class team of clinical specialists with making the course exceptional. "Dave and Clarence do a great job in challenging the current and historical concepts in perfusion," said Singapore attendee Joshua Byrne, from The Alfred Hospital, Victoria, Australia. "This, accompanied by simulation, helped to broaden my knowledge base and take new ideas back to my unit. A very good and enjoyable course."

Another Terumo Academy initiative, the series of "Terumo Academy @ Programs" offers abbreviated seminars held on-location at industry conferences and events, or customer sites. Designed to increase the base level of knowledge of perfusionists practicing in the field who may or may not have had exposure to formal education processes. Terumo Academy @ Programs typically focus on a particular topic or set of topics such as blood conservation or emergency response.

"Continuing education is something that never loses value," said Rohini Rebello-D'Souza, Sales & Marketing Manager, IMEA Region. "Customers are always grateful for meaningful education that we provide. To be able to help our customers effectively use the products we design and thereby save their patient's lives day in and day out is a very rewarding experience."
