Celebrating 40 years of technology and innovation...

By definition, an anniversary is an opportunity to look back and reflect on past achievements. It's difficult to imagine that 40 years have passed since Terumo first launched the innovative Capiox® line of oxygenators.

In 1982, with the unveiling of Capiox II, perfusionists were introduced to something they had never before seen; the world's first hollow fiber oxygenator, which simulated the gas exchange inside the human lung.

Over the following four decades Terumo has continued to create new products that are designed to meet the constantly evolving needs of the healthcare community - while still providing the same reliable performance on which critically ill patients have grown to rely.

Other significant milestones in the storied history of Capiox oxygenators include:

  • The 1988 launch of the Capiox E oxygenator - offering venous gravity drainage and an arterial reservoir for ease of use.
  • The 2000 introduction of the Capiox RX oxygenator - with exclusive fiber-weaving technology achieving superior gas exchange and low prime volume.
  • The 2015 release of the Capiox FX Advance oxygenator - with integrated arterial filter and advanced hardshell reservoir for improved flow dynamics.

Terumo Associates from around the world give their heartfelt congratulations during the Capiox oxygenator 40th anniversary celebration.

It’s important to remember that the future of Terumo’s Capiox oxygenators continues to be bright – with revolutionary new product launches on the horizon. Perfusionists can look forward to a new generation of innovative Capiox products that will continue to positively impact countless patients lives all over the world.

I have been using them for my entire career – for 21 years. I find it a very intuitive product… It is very user friendly and it allows the perfusion department to really focus on the patient.

Scott Kmiecik, CCP, Perfusion Department - The University of Kansas Health System

Through these 40 years, each successive product introduction in the Capiox line has focused on two critical aspects of an oxygenator - offering high performance for the operator and better outcomes for the patient.
